Instant wild rice…

Sunday, September 30th, 2007

Yes you read the title correctly — there is such a thing as instant wild rice.

Wild rice normally requires a long soaking and cooking period which can often be 1/2 hour to 45 minutes. Instant wild rice cooks in under 10 minutes.

I haven’t been able to find this product in Canada even though wild rice is grown here but I did find a wonderful company in Minnesota called Gibbs. They ship to Canada and their products are excellent. I loved the wild rice but they also have a delicious Cream of Wild Rice Cereal that is excellent with a little maple sugar sprinkled on top.

You can find product and ordering information on their website GibbsWildRice.com

Not your ordinary cheese powders…

Quite some time ago I was looking for a special thickener for gumbo called File Powder. Unable to find the ingredient in Canada I turned to The Spice House in Chicago. Recently I discovered that they carry some cheese powders that are a great addition to the wilderness traveller’s kitchen. The Blue Cheese Powder is decadent and the Romano Powder is a great additon to pasta. The Taylor Street Cheese Sprinkle is amazing on garlic bread, pizza or bannock.

They are an excellent company to deal with and shipping up to Canada seems to go very smoothly.
