Chili Chocolate—confessions of a chocoholic

Lindt Excellence ChiliTwo blog entries in the same day is not the norm for me but I was really excited to find one of my favorite chocolate treats finally available in Canada. What can I say? I am a chocoholic and I am pretty excited.

Back in April 2007 my husband went to Germany for five weeks as part of his job. He brought back the most wonderful chocolate bar for me from Lindt & Sprüngli. It was Lindt Excellence Chili—Swiss dark chocolate infused with spicy red chili pepper.

I fell in love with the flavor and contacted the company. They wrote back and told me that it was only available in Europe, but that was over a year ago.

Funny thing was that I found it today at, of all places, WalMart. I am not usually a WalMart shopper. The only reason we went there was because my son had a WalMart gift card he wanted to spend. So I figured I would peek at the chocolate and other grocery items to see what they had. To my delight I saw a whole section of Lindt products and right smack-dab in the middle was what I had been hoping for.

What I love about this chocolate is that it has a bit of a bite. You don’t taste the chili right away and it leaves a lingering tingle on your tongue. I look at this chocolate in some of the same ways I look at red wine. There is an aroma to the chocolate and a complexity. It has a fine texture and a rich, spicy finish that lingers on the palate. I don’t mean to make it sound pretentious but I feel that it is the best way to describe it. There is actually an article, Chocology: Chocolate Tasting on the Lindt website that is quite interesting.

Sometimes I impress easily. Now if only I can find the Lindt Excellence Intense Pear flavor. Then I will be the happiest of campers.
